About Smith OpticsBased in Sun Valley, Idaho, Smith Optics, Inc. was founded in 1965 with the creation of the first-ever goggle featuring a sealed thermal lens and breathable vent foam. In the early years, founder Dr. Bob Smith, an orthodontist by trade, made goggles by hand using dental tools, foam, and glue. Before he struck a deal for manufacturing of Smith goggles in the late 60s, Smith would often trade his creations for lift tickets. These early prototypes were usually manufactured by Smith and friends around the kitchen table.
Building on that goggle heritage and extending its expertise, Smith Sport Optics has gone on to set the standard for high-performance eyewear and goggles. Innovations over the years include the Fog-X anti-fog coating, PMT Perforated Membrane Technology lens ventilation system, patented Turbo C.A.M. Constant Air Management system, patented Regulator adjustable lens ventilation system, patented Roll Off's film advance system for motocross, patented ODS (Ocular Docking System) prescription insert, and patented Slider series sunglasses, the most innovative interchangeable lens sunglass available.
Today, Smith Optics has become synonymous with innovative, durable, top-quality products in the eyewear and goggle market. The company is also recognized for its unparalleled team roster, which boasts some of the top names in biking, motocross, skiing, snowboarding, surfing, skateboarding, and wakeboarding. Like many other companies, Smith utilizes team input as a key element of new product introductions. In addition, Smith athletes are actively involved in the development process for performance testing and coloration selection.
Smith products are sold worldwide in more than 50 countries through specialty and sporting goods stores. From Smith's distortion-free Tapered Lens Technology to the versatility of the Slider Series, with its patented, interchangeable lens system, its devotion to excellence, innovation and style has made Smith goggles and sunglasses the choice of action-sport athletes worldwide. Smith Pivlock V90 Max Sunglass (Brown Crystal, Bronze/Ignitor/Clear Mirror)
Average Reviews:

When I bought these glasses, I was dubious about the way the temple supports locked to the lens. Surely a product with a warranty will hold up.
I took them out for two bike rides, and stored them in their case between rides. I've had them for just over three weeks. No impacts, no drops, nothing of note whatsoever.
I took them out of their case today and noticed two large cracks emanating from the hole the temple supports locked in. I had to ride with, as they were the only pair I had with me. By the time I finished my 25 mile ride, the cracks had extended nearly to the perimeter of the lens.
I am very disappointed with this product.

Oakley doesn't mind being repeat offenders when it comes to thrashing the world\'s idea of performance. Take a look at the Inmate and you\'ll see why. Assertive style with a honed edge, it\'s a look that refuses to be caged or even take orders, for that matter. Five metal compounds are fused to create durable C-5™, a lightweight alloy that unlocks comfort. The frame makes contact only at the nose bridge and temples, thanks to a Three-Point Fit that utilizes Unobtainium components to increase grip with sweat. High Definition Optics (HDO®) offers unbelievable clarity while letting the lenses contour to your peripheral view. Their Plutonite lens material blocks 100% of all UVA, UVB and UVC, and even stops harmful blue light up to 400nm. When it comes to impact protection, they meet all ANSI Z80.3 Industrial Standards. The polarized lenses are engineered to block the blinding, eye-straining rays of glare that are magnified by flat surfaces such as snow, water and pavement. Designed to compliment Asian facial anatomy in both fit and comfort.

In contrast to the other gentleman's review, I have had my pair of Crosshair's for over six months now. No issues with them as of yet. I don't see how the lenses could pop out of the frame because of tension.. I'm looking at mine now and they seem to be curved in precisely the same manner as the frame. Should not have any tension on them. I can't comment on them being knocked out by any "slight impacts", I am very careful with my sunglasses.
Oakley has discontinued this model though, so there very well could be an issue with them. My pair is a custom set, so possibly I lucked out. It sucks they d/c'ed them. I had been waiting years for a set of Oakley's that resembled aviators. These are quite nice. I recommend them at that price, seeing as I paid almost double that for my custom set...

Oakley Men's Half Wire 2.0 Iridium Sunglasses Review

Oakley Men's Half Wire 2.0 Iridium Sunglasses
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a long time Oakley watch owner (eight and counting), I was thrilled to find out in August 2009 that my eyeglass prescription would fit in a pair of their Half Wire 2.0 sunglasses. My nine year old pair of Calvin Klein sunglasses had finally worn out, so I decided it was time to buy a "real" pair of sunglasses. The cost of the Half Wires was considerably higher than any pair of prescription sunglasses I'd previously owned (Porsche Design, Ray-Ban, Calvin Klein), but based on my experience with their watches, I was convinced that the quality would be far superior. I was wrong.
When picking up the Oakleys from the local authorized dealer, I immediately noticed that one of the set screws had created a slight crack in the lens it was securing, and the lens itself was slightly loose. Already having been without a serviceable pair of sunglasses for several weeks, I was told that their warranty would handle any problem that might develop, so I left as a proud owner of a new pair of Oakleys. Over the next three or four months, the crack in the lens slowly grew, and the lens began to rock in the frames. I took the glasses back to the dealer, they contacted Oakley, and several weeks later, I was happily wearing a new pair with tight fitting lenses and no crack defects.
Less than ten months later, I took out my Half Wires to put on, opened them up, and one of the temple pieces popped right out of the main frame, sending the glasses spinning to the pavement. They landed on the bottom edge of both pristine lenses, causing two small divots in the bottom edge of both lenses. Returning once again to the dealer, I subsequently found out that my Oakleys were no longer under warranty, even though they had been replaced with a brand new pair less than eight months earlier. Now on backorder for the past month, the replacement frames will be provided to me for a cost $30 less than retail when they come in. Better than full retail cost I suppose, but I will now have a new pair of frames that shouldn't have broken in the first place with two damaged lenses. Oakley responded with a nondescript corporate line that disavowed any further responsibility.
Being a detail oriented architect, I take immaculate care of my glasses, and I am very disappointed that the lifespan of their glasses is apparently so limited. I haven't taken them rock climbing, jet skiing or base jumping - pity the fool that does. I even wore my old soldered together Calvin Kleins when I went white water canoeing earlier this summer because I didn't want to risk losing the Oakleys. Companies live and die between the perception and reality of their product line, and while stylish design will get you accolades and customers, longevity is what keeps the customers coming back for more.

Imagine hitting a dangerous curve at 186,000 miles per second. With ordinary lenses, that\'s what light has to deal with, and the rays skid off in directions that cause visual distortion. So when Oakley made a frame with this much curvature, they used HIGH DEFINITION OPTICS® (HDO®) to achieve the best clarity under the sun. All that contouring maximizes peripheral vision and side protection against sun, wind and impact. Lightweight C-5™ alloy is combined with custom-engineered spring hinges to optimize comfort, and 3-D digital sculpturing puts the look in a category of its own. The open-edge lenses offer an unobstructed downward view while filtering out 100% of all UV. Their renowned Three-Point Fit keeps the lenses in precise optical alignment. UNOBTAINIUM® stem sleeves maintain a supple grip, and sweat only makes them grip better.

Smith Phenom Turbo Fan Goggle

I tried these goggles out for a total of several minutes during a week backcountry Canada ski trip and they failed miserably: (1) they fogged horribly despite the expensive fan. Despite poor fog clearing from the inner lens, the design also allows fog to collect between the inner and outer lenses. (2) the tint renders light completely flat, with snow features unrecognizable. My ski buddy's rose-colored sunglasses worked terrificly. I ended up skiing bare eyes or sunglasses. Thanks for Amazon returns, but a test drive before you buy is worthwhile!

Part of Smith's most advanced Turbofan collection, the Phenom Turbo Fan goggle features a medium fit with an expanded interior volume to increase fan airflow. It has a two-speed micro-electronic fan that clears vapor from the spherical, Carbonic-X lens (with TLT optics) area faster than any static airflow goggle design. Last year Smith tweaked the fan functionality for better performance--and now it's so good that they gave the Phenom Turbo Fan a lifetime manufacturer's warranty. The patented fan design has a silent micro-electronic fan that runs continuously. There's also a high-speed airflow setting that works great during those long hauls up backcountry ridgelines. Depending on the setting you choose, the fan batteries can be good for up to 50 hours, but keep in mind that extreme cold temperatures can drain batteries faster than most typical sessions on sunny spring afternoons. The Phenom's Carbonic-X lens have a curved spherical design that helps increase the interior volume and reduce the probability of condensation. An exclusive Fog-X treatment also contributes to the anti-fogging performance. Spherical lenses look cool, but some cheap goggles have a bulging lens that distorts the view and makes your eyes feel tired after a couple of runs. Smith's TLT (Tapered Lens Technology) eliminates the refractions and keeps all objects in your line in normal dimensions. This is done by progressively tapering the lens from the optical center toward your peripheral view, matching the curvature of your natural eye shape. Another nice touch on the Phenom is Smith's articulating outrigger positioning system. It's an extra hinge that extends from the corner of the frame to help the strap stretch around the contours of your ski or snowboarding helmet. This extension creates an even pressure across your brow and nose instead of that annoying stretch sensation you might feel from goggles that are not compatible with helmets. The big benefit from the articulating outrigger is the
