It is large enough to be heard 30-40 feet away so you can alert people that you are approaching even at high speed. The outer bell rotates while the hammer is on the inside, so you can flick the bell with your finger to get a polite "ding" or two, or you can bear down on the racheting lever to unleash a burst of rings or even a continuous stream of sound, as the rotational momentum of the bell itself will carry it past the cocking pause of the lever. It is a good design, based on the classical bike bells of yesteryear but the externally rotating shell (bell) is an improvement. Having said that, there is a slight caveat. The finish is a little rough and everything is made from stampings so this is not a "work of art" and doesn't run like a swiss watch although it does get better with use. But hey, what do you want for $11? It is loud enough to do what a bell should do, has versatility of action, gets smiles from everyone, and you won't mind leaving it out in the rain. This is a good working bell, not a showpiece, and for my money, the best bike accessory out there.
