(More customer reviews)I have a whole set of these, from 10 pounders to 45 pounders. They are a great fitness aid, as they are immensely portable and can be used in any room of the house, while watching TV, or next to your computer desk. There are a wealth of exercises one can do with simple dumbells: curls, bent rowing, overhead extensions, etc. If you have a bench, there are even more. Believe it or not, a home body builder can get a pretty decent workout from a limited set of these dumbells. They are relatively cheap compared to other brands. I recommend them.

(More customer reviews)I was shopping for USA-made dumbbells, and came across these. I asked prior to buying if they were made in the USA and was told yes. Shipping took a while and when I finally got them, the box and the product were stamped all over "made in China." I was so pissed! They acknowledged they are in fact made in China, but were uncooperative about a return. I could have chosen a few brands of made in the USA dumbbells, but I chose these thinking I was going to get a good quality product. I didn't care that these were chrome, so I could have gotten Chinese-made dumbbells at Walmart for a heck of a lot less. I ended up having to file an A-to-Z claim with Amazon. Total bummer.

(More customer reviews)This is the first review I've ever been compelled to write about a product, so that should give you some idea of how unhappy we are with our purchase. We own 8 sets of CAP Rubber Coated Hex Dumbells (model SDR) ranging from 8 lbs. to 35 lbs. We purchased them because of the textured grip and shape which are great. As you might expect, this was a costly purchase. Shortly after bringing them home, we discovered the rubber compound used at the ends of the dumbells has a strong odor. We contacted the store where we had purchased the equipment and we were told the odor would dissipate. When the odor persisted and we called back three months later, the store was out of business. We contacted CAP, the manufacturer, to seek advice. Our first call was not returned. I reached a person on my second call who said she would speak with her boss about what they could do. Again, no response. On the third call, I was instructed to wash the dumbells and leave them outside to air out for a few days and that others who had similar complaints generally did not call back after doing this (so this is a problem they are aware of). We carried all eight sets up to the garage and washed and air dried as advised. Within a day of putting them back in the garage to see if the odor was gone, the garage smelled of rubber! When we called back for the last time, we were advised that the company does not deal directly with consumers. We explained that the store we purchased their product from was no longer in business, but that another store affiliated with the company who bought out the chain that sold us the equipment originally was willing to assist us in any way possible (as they had also had similar complaints). We offered to pay the incremental cost for chrome dumbells that CAP sells if we could exchange the existing dumbells we currently own (which the store was willing to facilitate). They would not do this and claim that the odor is not a defect in the product and therefore not covered under the warranty. We are now going to put an ad out to sell these (with full disclosure on the odor). I strongly caution anyone against purchasing this product, particularly if this product is going in a room that does not open to the outdoors. More broadly, I would be wary of doing business with CAP as they do not stand by their product.

(More customer reviews)The Cap Barbell Chrome Dumbbell SDC sets are very attractive in appearance. They have a sleek design that gleams in the sunlight and that can be good for motivation. The handles of the dumbbells are rough and knurled so that they are easy to grip. They are easy to wipe down and clean, and they tend to keep their shine.
This 5 lbs. dumbbell is the second-lightest weight on offer. For aerobic use, weighted-hands while walking and doing other exercises, this is a way to go for many. The 3 lbs. level is good for beginners; for a little more burn a few more pounds resistance will help. It may not sound like much, but after a while of holding them, the weight begins to take its toll. After all, two 5 lbs. dumbbells is the equivalent of carrying around a 10 lbs. sack of potatoes.
Gyms and hotels often have this kind of dumbbell, and often the full range of these dumbbells. They range from 3lbs. per to 50lbs. per in this range of configuration: 3, 5, 8, 10, 12, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, and 50 lbs. This is a very good range. Hard core lifters will want heavier weights, but that is often where machines and multiple plate weights come into the picture.
There is a very convenient thing about just going over the rack on the wall and picking up two dumbbells, going to work and not having to screw plates on, or use tools to adjust clamps and locks. Just pick up the dumbbells and start cranking out the reps.
Dumbbells are useful for many exercises -- from strength training to toning to aerobics. For home use, one will probably only need a few sets chosen for one's own resistance level. Figure this out ahead of time because the downside of dumbbells like this is that they are not adjustable -- what you see is what you get.
Lighter weights are useful for toning; heavier weights for strengthening and muscle building. For aerobic help, lighter weights are the way to go. These 5 lbs. dumbbells are good for light toning and aerobics. Remember to purchase two of them!
Remember the issue of storage -- a few sets can fit in the closet or under a table, and the chrome kind will look nice. If you are serious about working out in different ways, then dumbbells should be a part of that training as they are more flexible is use. A set of dumbbells is a must; a few of different weights is a good long-term investment, as they do not wear out.
