1) because they are extremely small, and I can carry one in my jeans pocket wherever I go
2) because of the pressurized ink, I can lie in bed all night doing crosswords with the crosswords above my head and never ever have to shake the pen to get the ink to come out (impossible to get a regular pen to work like that without multiple shakings throughout the night).
Benefits of this particular version of the chrome "bullet" is that it has a small triangular flip-up attachment at the top which can stop the pen from rolling away from you on a flat surface. I would recommend either a bullet like this (with the triangular flip) or a bullet with a clip (see my review of the red space pen w/ clip) over a plain one....the reason being that the plain bullet pens are so sleek that they have a tendency to roll away on a flat surface (i.e. a plain one would frequently fall off my nightstand whenever I would put it down).
Also, the mini-maglite that came with it is also a nice spare flashlight to have (though, I have to say that I use my Black Diamond Gizmo headlamp as my main flashlight.....I love that thing).
